Over the last four years, I’ve had an opportunity to establish important
relationships with Curley school community. The relationships are important to
the work and as a district we have to ensure all stakeholders are included and
welcomed in our schools. My intent is to always include and collaborate with
students, teachers, administrators and community partners and of course our
parents. My work is rewarding and brings me a sense of accomplishment. I believe our work is directly connected to
the goals of ensuring all children are given an opportunity to be successful.

My name is Luciano Felix and I have been at the Thomas A. Edison K-8 School in Brighton for the past seven years. In 2003 New York City hired 1,200 Parent Cordinators. I started working as a Parent Coordinator that same year at Public School 18 in Manhattan. My biggest challenge in New York was establishing a School Parent Council and School Site Council. From the beginning, I started with a small group of parents who didn't know much about By-Laws, creating an Agenda or facilitating meeting. With my support they were fast learners and soon became leaders oftheir school and other schools. In 2007 I moved to Boston and was hired by Mr. Sterm to work at the Edison. Once again teachers told me how hard it was to get parents to join the School Parent Council / School Site Council. I started to meet teachers and parents, I was able to put together a group of parents that represented the diversity of our school community. Our School Parent Council and School Site Council have been consistent and running for the past seven years. I think that what I love about my work is that I am able to support the Principal, teachers, staff, community partners, families and most of all students. FCOC needed to be multi taskers because every day we are facing different situations where we need to support teachers for traslation, outreach for school events, set up meetings with teachers and families, Faciltate meetings, prepare for a workshop or classes for parents, find tutors or after school prograns for students in their neighborhood, or just go to the Hospital with a student. My days go really fast and we are never finished with our task. I would like to continue supporting families who would otherwise be lost in our school system.

Abigal Rodriguez at the Young Achievers
Science & Mathematics Pilot School- 617-635-6804
My name is Abigail (Abby) Rodriguez. I am the Family and Community Outreach
Coordinator (FCOC) at the Young Achievers Science & Mathematics Pilot
School. I have been an FCOC for the past
five years. Prior to becoming the FCOC
at Young Achievers I was the Office and Facilities Manager for 13 years. In those thirteen years I realized my passion
for helping and supporting families and student.
I've learned that our families and students are the
customers of the schools that we work for.
Therefore we are to ensure that families and students are welcomed,
acknowledged, respected and made important so that they can become active partners
with the school for the purpose of their children’s success. It is for this reason that I became invested
in crafting the relationships with families, students and the staff of my
school community and seeing myself as an agent of change.
Through these five years as an FCOC I have been able to
collaborate, support and build strong relationships with hundreds of people,
staff, students and families from all walks of life, strengthen my school’s
community and in many different ways have been able to build their capacity to
be engaged, advocate and invest as active partners for the betterment and
quality of their lives.
Human Services is my calling, I believe that I was put
on this earth with the purpose to aid other people and communities in
need. As a Family Coordinator I am happy
to know that I making a difference for the people that I support. It’s truly rewarding and satisfying work!

My name is Maria Monteiro-Roby; I currently
work at Curley K-8 School in Jamaica Plain. I've been working as a Family
Community Outreach Coordinator (FCOC) for the past 4 years. My previous
position was Administrative Assistant to the Vice President for the Office of
Sponsored Research at Joslin Diabetes Center. My reason for applying for the
FCOC position was because of my volunteering work at my sons’ school. I served
as a Co-Chair for the METCO parent group for two years. I knew how important it
was for all parents to be engaged in their child’s education and obstacles
parents faced when they were not offered the proper resources. I believe all
parents want their child to succeed but may not have the resources to support
their child’s academic success. My role as an FCOC is essential in ensuring
families are engaged and all families have access to resources available.
